NEW MEDICATIONS

Meridia
Meridia (sibutramine) was approved by the FDA. Manufactured by Knoll Pharmaceuticals, this medication has been shown to be helpful in losing weight. Currently it does not seem to be associated with primary pulmonary hypertension or the heart risks that were associated with other weight loss medication. WORKSHOPS

Cognitive-Behavior Approach to Weight Loss:
An eleven-week long course focused on shaping and strengthening behaviors to enhance weight loss and help increase your sense of control. Classes last one hour, Saturday mornings and cost $25.00 per week (non-refundable). Therapist: Wendy Worth, Ph.D. Open to VanItallie patients only.

Cooking Workshop:
A three-week workshop will teach you how to prepare seasonal vegetables with low-fat sauces, how to buy and prepare easy seafood dishes and how to put together a variety of seasonal salads with tasty low-calorie dressings. Classes are two hours long and $100.00 for the three week series (non-refundable). Instructor: Katherine Alford. All are welcome.

Stress Management:
A four-week course designed to teach various stress management skills using meditation, yoga, body scanning and progressive relaxation. Classes last one hour and cost $25 per class (non-refundable). Instructor: Ann Bassen, MSW, CSW. All are welcome.

Emotional Conflicts and Eating:
A twelve-week group held on Tuesday evenings from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. This class includes topics on motivation, anger, guilt, intimacy and relationships, self-esteem and sexuality. Classes last 45 minutes and cost $35 per week (non-refundable). Therapist: Fran Weiss, CSW. Open to VanItallie patients only.

Body Image:
Do you over or underestimate your body size? How do you feel about your self image or inner self? Explore these issues in a ten week experiential workshop, once a week the cost is $25.00 per week (non-refundable). Therapist: Fran Weiss, CSW. CLOSED GROUP.

CLUBS

Hiking Club
VanItallie offers various hikes through Harriman State Park, Bear Mountain and Black Rock Forest and many more locations. Hikes are $25.00 and are lead by Rich Weil and Lisa Swerdlow (physician permission is required).

Take-A-Walk
VanItallie has an organized walking club. Beginner walks are 1.5 miles at a comfortable pace and are suitable for anyone. Walks take place on Mondays at 6:00 pm and Thursdays at 1:00 pm. Intermediate walks are 2.5 to 3.0 miles at a comfortable pace and take place on Thursdays at 6:00 pm. Walks cost $12.00 per walk. Rain cancels. (Open to current VanItallie patients only.)
